Sainte-Barbe.

Sainte-Barbe wraps around the north jetty of the Baie de Saint-Jean-de-Luz, breaking over a mix of uneven reef and sand to produce one of the Basque Coast's standout right-handers. The takeoff at the jetty is steep, hollow and demanding - the wave then walls through a series of shoulder sections as it refracts further into the bay, covering 100-200m before losing energy at Inside Sainte-Barbe, where the reform flattens and softer, bouncy lefts occasionally appear. It comes alive on NW to N swells in the 1-4.5m range, with a dropping tide keeping the sections linked; any wind from the eastern quadrant - NE through SE - holds the face clean. The bay's relative shelter makes it a default destination when exposed reefs to the north are maxing, concentrating the lineup considerably. Paddling out to the jetty head is a long haul and cross-currents can make it laborious - entry is from the beach on the south side of the jetty. Water quality drops after heavy rain due to estuary runoff, which unfortunately tends to coincide with the stormy swells that switch this wave on. The lineup organises itself loosely by ability: experts dominate the steep jetty peak, intermediates spread across the Insides section, and beginners find the sheltered Les Flots Bleus mini-wave closer to shore.
