Surf spot guide · Lanzarote, Spain
Small but punchy sand-bottom beachbreak fronting Lanzarote's airport runway, livening up on N to E windswell.
Playa Honda, also known locally as Matagorda, is a long sand-bottom beachbreak running parallel to Lanzarote's airport runway on the south-east side of the island. The wave is small but surprisingly powerful, with shifting left and right peaks that turn steep and hollow in the 0.3 to 1.8m range before closing out once size jumps. It needs windswell from the N through E to fire, since the bay sits in the lee of the trades and rarely sees clean groundswell. A NW offshore tidies up the faces during howling N-E winds that otherwise blow the surface to bits. Size builds toward the south end of the beach, but that section is also the most exposed to the wind. Access is straightforward via the seafront promenade in front of the Playa Honda urbanisation, with roadside parking and a free car park nearby. Crowds stay light most days, with mainly local beginners and longboarders sharing the peaks. When the airport runway is dead calm, head north toward Matagorda for cleaner banks.
Shifting peaks turn hollow fast over sand before the closeout swallows them whole.
You’re seeing the next 3 days. A free account opens all 14, which is the difference between checking tomorrow and planning a trip.
Numbers stay low year-round, with a handful of local beginners and longboarders sharing the peaks. Easy to find an empty bank by walking up or down the strand.
