Heavy, square-shouldered reef left at La Santa breaking over The Slab, the most fought-over wave on Lanzarote.
La Santa Izquierda is the long left peeling off The Slab, an uneven reef sitting just north of La Santa harbour on Lanzarote's north-west coast. The wave throws thick, square barrels over a supershallow ledge, holds size from 0.6m to 3m, and runs for 100-200m on the cleanest sets, with a wedging takeoff that demands an air-drop on bigger days. A right peels off the same reef but the left is the longer and more contested side. The break holds an unusually wide W through N swell window and stays makeable in solid easterly trades, which is part of why it stays loaded with surfers whenever it's on. As Lanzarote's most ridden reef, it carries a heavy localism reputation and the lineup is effectively closed to most travelling surfers. Access is straightforward on foot from the village just north of the harbour, but car break-ins are common, so nothing is left in the vehicle.

HAZARDS · KNOW BEFORE YOU PADDLE
Walk-in access from the village just north of La Santa harbour. Free parking in the harbour car park and along the roadside, but car break-ins are routinely flagged in the lineup so nothing should be left behind. No lifeguard, restrooms, showers, surf school or surf shop logged at the break.
