Wind-driven left-hander beachbreak in Costa Teguise, Lanzarote's most accessible surf spot for beginners and intermediates.
Las Cucharas sits on the sheltered east coast of Lanzarote in Costa Teguise. The break is almost entirely trade-wind powered: the persistent NE Alisio winds generate short, punchy lefts along the sand-and-rock bottom. Waves rarely exceed 1.5m and run 30 to 50 metres before closing out, forgiving for beginners yet occasionally punchy enough for intermediates. Best shape comes on a rising tide with a solid NE swell and a light SW wind backing the trades off. Conditions are most consistent from autumn through spring when NE swells push across the Atlantic and hit the bay directly. Summer brings flatter, glassy days. Multiple surf schools operate year-round, drawn by the reliable, manageable waves and easy beach access. Facilities are excellent: parking, restaurants, and equipment hire are steps from the sand. The famed big-wave spots at Famara and La Santa are a different world entirely. Treat Las Cucharas as a progression beach and a daily option when the northwest coast is too big.
Busy most mornings with surf-school groups and beginners, especially in peak tourist season. Weekday afternoons thin out as trade winds strengthen and conditions deteriorate.
