Fão sits at the mouth of the Cávado river on Portugal's north coast, where a series of training jetties lock the sandbars into predictable shapes. The result is a sheltered beach break that throws up peaky A-frames on both sides, typically in the 0.6-2.4m range, with wave lengths running 50-100m before the energy dissipates. The bottom is pure sand throughout, keeping things forgiving even on bigger swells. NW swell is optimal - the jetty orientation funnels northwest energy cleanly onto the bars - though the spot picks up SW through NW without major filtering. Any reasonable east wind holds the face well, and because the banks are structurally stable, surfable conditions appear across all tide stages with reasonable consistency through the year. The village is small and the water rarely gets crowded, making it a practical option when busier spots to the south are packed. Entry is straightforward from the beach with no rock jump required. The main caveat is the small river draining at the northern end of the beach: estuary runoff can compromise water quality, particularly after rainfall. Intermediates looking for uncrowded conditions and a predictable peak will find this reliable; beginners benefit from the forgiving bottom and manageable crowd levels.
