Esposende.

Esposende's beachbreak runs north along an open, west-facing stretch of coast where peaks shift up and down the sand depending on how the bars have stacked up. The waves are generally forgiving - soft-shouldered and workable across most of the swell range - which makes this one of the more accessible stretches of the Portuguese north coast without being flat or boring. It handles the 0.3m-1.8m range comfortably; anything bigger tends to close out across the wider beach sections. The spot responds best to a clean NW swell with a light easterly keeping the faces groomed, and it accepts swell from a wide arc so it sees rideable waves with reasonable regularity throughout autumn and winter. Crowds are genuinely light here - the busier breaks at Fão to the south and Ofir draw the bulk of passing surfers, leaving this stretch surprisingly uncrowded even on good days. Water temperature runs cold by Iberian standards, so a winter-weight wetsuit is necessary for most of the year. The estuary proximity means water quality can dip after sustained rainfall. Parking is free and straightforward from the town.
