São Vicente is a left-breaking boulder reef sitting directly in front of the town of the same name on Madeira's exposed north coast. The lineup runs over an uneven field of boulders, producing left-hand walls in the 50-100m range when the swell cooperates. The wave is most consistent on a solid NW swell pushing into the north-facing bay, with the W-to-NE window covering most viable swells. Southwesterly winds blow offshore here, which can clean up the faces and make the wave considerably more workable. At its best it delivers rideable walls for intermediates looking to escape the busier breaks to the east, but it fires rarely and the conditions need to align precisely - the wrong swell angle or a touch too much size turns it into a washing-machine close-out over the rocks. Entry requires careful reading of the boulder field; picking a channel before paddling out saves unnecessary punishment. The nearby village offers seafood restaurants along the oceanfront, making it a worthwhile stop even on flat days.
