Jardim do Mar is a right-hand point break over a boulder bottom on Madeira's southwest coast. On the right swell it delivers critical drops into thick, fast walls that wrap and reel for up to 500 metres. The break needs solid W to NW swell to engage, and dead low tide is now the only workable window. A seawall completed in 2003 changed everything: the concrete creates violent backwash above low tide, compressing usable sessions to a couple of hours around the outgoing. On large swells the wave breaks closer to shore than before, making getting caught inside genuinely dangerous. Once ranked the world's finest big-wave point break by Surfer Magazine, Jardim now shows its former quality only a handful of times per year. Entry must be made from the backside of the point west of the village - the front approach on any significant swell is hazardous with the wall directly behind you. Crowds are kept honest by expert-only conditions and the narrow tide window.

HAZARDS · KNOW BEFORE YOU PADDLE
Access via the main south-shore highway past Ribeira Brava and Calheta, following signs for Jardim do Mar. Car park available, free of charge. Water entry must be made from the backside of the point, west of the village - this is the only safe paddle-out route on significant swells. The seawall sits directly behind the lineup; getting caught inside is extremely dangerous.
