Surf spot guide Β· Madeira, Portugal
Expert-level left barrel on Madeira's north coast, breaking almost at sea level over a shallow uneven reef.
Contreiras, also known locally as Bruxas - Portuguese for 'Witches' - is a left-hand point break on the rugged north coast of Madeira, sitting between Porto do Moniz and Sao Vicente. The wave breaks over a shallow, uneven reef that sits almost at sea level, producing thick, hollow barrel sections with an exceptionally steep and critical takeoff. From shore it appears deceptively manageable, but the reality is a fast, vertically dropping wall that demands split-second commitment. North swells of medium size hit the sweet spot, rearing up over the shallow reef to generate tube sections running 100 to 200 metres when the swell direction is precise. The window is tight - too far west and the shape deteriorates - so the break rewards patience. A southerly wind cleans the face and conditions are best at low to mid tide when the reef reveals its proper shape. Access is via the old coast road connecting Porto do Moniz with Sao Vicente, with free roadside parking available. Exposed rock is a constant factor throughout the lineup.

Contreiras sees very few surfers. The demanding skill requirement and location on the rugged north coast keep the lineup almost empty even when it is on.
