Ribeira da Janela is a left-handed point break on Madeira's remote north-west coast, breaking over boulders beneath a volcanic seamount rising roughly 90 metres behind the lineup. The wave delivers freight-train walls with long barrel sections running 100 to 200 metres when the swell connects. Takeoffs are critical and airdrop-steep, demanding full commitment. The break needs a solid north swell in the 1.8 to 6m range and fires best at low to rising tide when sections link up cleanest. South-westerly winds blow offshore when the southern coast is hammered by storms, making this the go-to refuge for experienced surfers chasing clean water while the rest of the island shuts down. That shelter-and-quality combination pulls a crowd on the right days despite the remote location. Large boulders line the shore, sitting dangerously close to the lineup - injuries have happened here and the entry and exit require full attention. Roadside parking is available directly below the cliffs.
