Surf spot guide · Madeira, Portugal
Madeira's most consistent south-shore right: a long, fast boulder-bottom point that turns deadly on the inside section.
High Waves
Large waves up to 2.7m expected at Ponta Pequena. Peak conditions around 9:00 AM.
Exercise extreme caution when entering the water. Strong currents and large waves present. Warning valid until 9:00 PM.
Ponta Pequena is a boulder-bottom right on Madeira's south coast, midway between Jardim do Mar and Paul do Mar, producing rides up to 500m on a strong west swell. From above it looks deceptively casual - wide lines rolling toward shore with apparent ease - but the inside section accelerates hard into a fast barrel that breaks close to the boulder shelf. Missing the exit means the rocks settle it. Low tide is the key: the shelf configuration gives the inside its shape and the long walls their definition. A defined channel makes the paddle-out manageable, unlike at Jardim do Mar where backwash and no channel complicate entry. Access requires a walk along the rocky shoreline under cliffs prone to rockfall and occasional landslide - move through that section without stopping. Ponta Pequena is the most consistent south-shore break on the island and draws local experts and visiting surfers on every significant swell. Crowds are moderate but the lineup is rarely empty when conditions align.
