Lugar de Baixo is a right-hand point break over boulders on Madeira's south coast, directly accessible from the main coastal road just west of Funchal. Once regarded as one of the island's finest barrels, a seawall constructed along the shore fundamentally altered its character by introducing a powerful backwash on the push of high water. The wave still fires on solid W to NW swells in the 1.5-4m range, delivering steep, fast, hollow sections with freight-train speed down the line over a 100-200m run. Takeoff sits next to or just inside a large outside boulder, where drops are near-vertical and commitment is mandatory. The sweet spot is the hour before and after high tide: the backwash subsides, the walls hollow out and the wave returns to something close to its former character. Low tide is off-limits for all but the boldest - the boulder bottom becomes dangerously shallow across the inside. Experts and advanced surfers only. The break draws weekend crowds from Funchal, Madeira's capital nearby, so weekday mornings give the best chance of space in the lineup.
