Ponta do Tristao sits at the far northwest tip of Madeira, a left reef-break detonating over a shallow rock ledge in near-total isolation. The wave draws on W to NW swells and pitches into fast, hollow sections with critical air-drop takeoffs. Most attempts result in a close-out: the break usually runs too fast unless the swell direction is dialled in precisely. At 1.5m it is already demanding; at 3-4m it produces powerful barrels that very few surfers can handle. Access acts as the first filter. Walk north from Porto Moniz, drop into the channel, then paddle all the way west to the tip - a sustained effort that takes 30-plus minutes each way. No facilities exist near the lineup. Will Henry, Angus Opie and Magnus Murray were the first to surf it, and hardly anyone has paddled out there since. SE winds clean the face. Consistency is low and sessions require a very specific W swell to produce anything makeable rather than a sequence of close-outs.

From Porto Moniz, head north on foot, get out through the channel, and then keep paddling west until you reach the tip of the point. Free parking available near Porto Moniz. No lifeguard, restrooms, showers, surf school or surf shop at or near the break.
