Surf spot guide · Madeira, Portugal
Remote, rarely surfed expert left over boulders on Madeira's north coast, firing on NW swells with S winds.
High Waves
Large waves up to 2.8m expected at São Jorge. Peak conditions around 9:00 AM.
Exercise extreme caution when entering the water. Strong currents and large waves present. Warning valid until 9:00 PM.
São Jorge is one of Madeira's most isolated surf spots, a left-hand boulder point break sitting on the island's rugged north coast that very few surfers have ever ridden. The wave breaks over a dense field of boulders and demands a committed vertical takeoff, then runs hollow and fast through barrel sections before petering out along the point. Rides of 100 to 200 metres are on offer when the swell lines up, though the window is narrow: a solid NW to N groundswell of 1.8 metres or more, paired with a southerly wind, is the combination that brings the wave to life. Because Madeira's north coast faces into the swell, the spot picks up energy readily, but the same exposure means onshores can arrive without warning and close the session. All tide stages are surfable, with the boulder bottom remaining reasonably well-covered throughout the cycle, though boils and shallow sections demand constant awareness. Access is difficult by island standards, requiring a long drive from the main surf hubs around Funchal and the west coast.

Essentially uncrowded. São Jorge is so remote and demanding that sessions with more than two or three surfers are rare. Most visits are solo or with a single travel partner who already knows the spot.

Allow extra drive time from Funchal or the west coast resorts, the road is long and winding
Check conditions from the clifftop before descending - the lineup looks very different from water level
