Porto da Cruz sits on Madeira's northeast coast, a left-hander breaking over a boulder bottom altered when authorities erected a seawall alongside it. The wave now works only at dead low tide, when exposed boulders create short left walls before the seawall cuts the ride short. It needs a clean north swell - the NW-NE window delivers the best shape - paired with westerly winds to hold the face. In its pre-seawall form it drew younger surfers up from Funchal looking for accessible waves on the northeast tip. That era is over. Today the break demands advanced competence: the low-tide-only window is narrow, the rocky exit unforgiving, and quality has dropped to a point where most locals head elsewhere when any swell is running on the south or west coast. A large seapool sits adjacent and can create confusing water movement around the take-off zone. Roadside parking is available. For a short 0-50m ride on a sparse swell window, the effort-to-reward ratio is low. Nearby Sao Jorge and Ponta Delgada may be worth scouting on the same north swell.
