Few beachbreaks near Lisbon are as dependable as Praia Grande, a long, exposed stretch of sand inside the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. The wave changes character noticeably with the tide: at low water the beach produces longer, slower-rolling peaks that suit beginners and intermediates working on trimming and footwork, while an incoming tide pushes the break shoreward and generates shorter, snappier sections with considerably more punch. Both modes run left and right off shifting sandbars across a wide stretch of beach. A cluster of rocks at the northern end provides enough shelter to occasionally throw up a protected right that rarely draws a crowd. The break responds to any swell from SW through N, with NW being the most productive angle, and it fires across a wide size range up to around 3m before sectioning. Wind is the critical variable - even moderate onshores quickly compromise the shape, so easterly or offshore conditions are essential. The beach draws a strong local following and gets busy whenever conditions align, with the popular stretch in front of the main access seeing the most traffic. Surf schools operate here regularly.
