São Julião is the swell magnet of the Ericeira coastline - a long, open-faced sandy bay that picks up energy from a wide window of directions and almost always has at least one workable sandbar running regardless of the tide. A-frame peaks shift along the beach, offering both left and right options, with the waves running at a medium-to-fast pace across a pure sand bottom. The bay's open exposure that makes it so consistent is also its weakness: onshore or side-onshore winds blow it out quickly, and when swell size climbs into the upper range the beach can max out and lose shape. Summer mornings on smaller swells draw crowds of beginners and learners, particularly around the surf school operations based here. Intermediate surfers can find quality sections on the better banks when conditions align, though the top reef breaks of the Ericeira World Surfing Reserve a short distance north will draw experienced surfers away on those same days. Entry is straightforward from the beach, with free car parking close by.
