Sheltered sand beach break near Ericeira's breakwall, best as a small-wave refuge when larger spots close out.
Furnas is a sheltered sand beach break tucked against a breakwall on the northern edge of Ericeira town. The surrounding cliffs screen out the worst of strong northerly winds, giving the spot a more protected character than the exposed reefs nearby. When functional, it produces slow, crumbly peaks and occasional rights off the breakwall - average in quality but reliable enough when bigger swells overwhelm every other spot in the area. The wave is mellow and forgiving, generated over a flat sandy bottom with no significant depth variation, making it genuinely accessible for surfers still building confidence. It responds best to W swells in the mid-tide window as the swell fills in or eases off, and handles a range of directions from SW through to NW. Paddle-out is straightforward from the beach. The main friction points are rip currents that run through the bay and periodic pollution, both worth monitoring before entering. Crowds are rarely an issue - this is not a destination wave and experienced surfers in Ericeira will typically be at Pedra Branca, Coxos or Praia do Norte. That lack of competition is arguably Furnas's best attribute.
