Nazaré Surf Spot Guide — Beira, Portugal

Nazaré's Praia do Norte sits above a deep submarine canyon that acts as a swell amplifier, channelling open-ocean energy directly at a sandy beach and producing some of the largest waves ever ridden. On a solid NW swell the beach peaks grow steep and thick, wedging and bowling as they hit the shallows - fast, powerful walls that demand immediate commitment on takeoff. The wave is not hollow in the conventional reef-break sense but the sheer mass of water makes even mid-face sections behave explosively. Rides stretch 100-200m on a good set. Consistency is low - the canyon needs a genuine groundswell and the beach sits fully exposed to wind, so clean sessions are earned rather than expected. The optimal window is an easterly offshore against a NW groundswell. When conditions align, this spot has hosted record-breaking rides on the Big-Wave World Tour and became globally known after near-fatal wipeouts drew mainstream media coverage. Entry is direct from the beach; the lighthouse headland above the north end is the standard viewing point. On big days the lineup mixes tow teams and elite paddle surfers - boat and jet-ski traffic is constant. On smaller swells the north end of the beach offers rideable peaks, and the main town beach to the south can produce a sheltered wedge when large swells wrap around the headland.
