Tonel.

Tonel sits on the southwestern tip of Portugal at Sagres, sheltered enough by the surrounding headlands to be the most reliably surfable beach in the area. It breaks over a sandy bottom as an a-frame peak, generating both lefts and rights, with a small rocky island offshore that helps carve defined channels through what would otherwise be a wall of close-outs. The wave is predominantly mellow and slopey but can hollow out sharply on clean offshore days when the sandbars are well-formed - those sessions produce short, steep cylinders that punch above the spot's usual reputation. Size sits in the 0.6-2.4m range, and unlike the exposed west-coast beaches it doesn't absorb as much raw Atlantic swell, making it the default choice for surf schools, bodyboarders and travelling intermediates on bigger swells. A west swell is optimal; south and northwest angles also work. The incoming tide at lower stages tends to produce the better-shaped waves. Entry and exit are straightforward from the beach. Crowd levels are consistently high - the combination of accessibility, consistency and beginner-friendly conditions draws a full roster of learners, local bodyboarders and surf school groups most days. Localism exists but is relatively mild by Sagres standards.
