Ponta Ruiva is a multi-option break on the Algarve's exposed west-facing coastline, built around a quality lefthand point that peels off rocks into the bay. The main left runs 100-200m over a rock ledge and sand bottom, producing bowly, fast walls that steepen on the better sets. A heavy, hollow right breaks across the channel - serious water movement and strong rips make this option strictly for experienced surfers. On smaller swells, average beachbreak peaks fill in across the bay. The spot needs a solid W-NW swell to show its best; it works across all tides, though the rocky sections get exposed at low and mid-tide often produces cleaner conditions at the point. Once known only to a tight local crew, Ponta Ruiva is now a recognised destination on the Algarve circuit. It draws a crowd whenever the swell reaches head-high or above, and locals protect their peak with intent. The take-off sits tight against the rocks - positioning matters. Access is via a long dirt road across open coastal plain, rough enough to deter rental cars, dropping down to a small cliff-top car park that fills quickly on swell days.
