Mareta Surf Spot Guide — Algarve, Portugal

Mareta is a sand-bottom beach break on the southern edge of Sagres, producing a-frame peaks that pitch into genuinely hollow, fast-running lefts and rights when conditions align. The wave has a bowly character - it wells up quickly over the well-covered sandy floor and throws with enough force to demand a committed takeoff, making it more consequential than its beach-break tag suggests. Getting it good is the challenge: it needs either a substantial W-NW swell wrapping around the Cape St. Vincent headland or a clean S groundswell to light up, and neither arrives reliably. When it does fire, the 50-100m wave faces in the 0.6-2.4m range are among the better hollow beach waves on the Algarve coast. Summer Levante winds occasionally build short-period wind-swell that gets the spot moving, though shape suffers. Offshore NE winds are the key, and those tend to coincide with the calmer shoulder-season mornings. Entry is straightforward from the town beach with easy car-park access. The trade-off is crowd pressure - Mareta draws heavily from Sagres town and visiting surfers, and the lineup can reach saturation point on any working swell. Localism is a real factor; those new to the spot should read the lineup carefully before paddling out.
