Zavial Surf Spot Guide — Algarve, Portugal

Zavial is the benchmark beach break of the Algarve's south coast, best known for a quick, hollow right that wedges hard against the cliffs at the eastern end of the beach. The wave is bowly and fast, with a well-covered bottom that keeps sections from draining too abruptly - giving it a punchy, powerful feel rather than a grinding dry-suck. A left also peels from the same peak on good days, making it a genuine a-frame when the swell aligns correctly. The break needs a moderate SW or a substantial W-NW swell to fire properly, and mid-to-high tide is the window to target: too low and the whole beach closes out. Best wind is NE, which sits offshore for this stretch of coastline. Water temps run slightly warmer here than the exposed west-facing Algarve beaches - a mild advantage in shoulder season. Zavial carries the heaviest crowd of any south-coast spot in the region, with a territorial local crew that is out at the first hint of swell. Paddling straight into the main peak without reading the lineup first is a quick way to earn a cold reception. When the atmosphere feels too charged, the surrounding coastline holds additional options worth scouting. Wave faces typically run short - most rides are in the 0-50m range - so positioning and priority matter more than stamina.
