São Torpes.

São Torpes is a broad Atlantic-facing beach break on the Alentejo coast, producing a-frame peaks across a sandy bottom that shift character from north to south. The northern stretch, partially sheltered by a jetty and the industrial infrastructure of a major oil refinery complex, catches less direct swell but benefits from protection against north winds - useful when the main beach is blown out. Moving south, peaks become more exposed, more powerful and more consistent, eventually meeting the first rocks and coves that add variety to the lineup and generate occasional reef-influenced sections. Waves are predominantly slopey and steep-faced with medium speed, lending themselves to performance surfing rather than pure barrel hunting. The break works best on NW swell at low to mid tide, when the sandbars shape up most cleanly. Consistency is solid by regional standards, firing reliably through autumn and winter swells. Crowds are moderate - well known enough to draw surfers from Sines and further afield on good days, but the beach is long enough to spread the pack. A surf school operates here and facilities are well established, reflecting its standing as a family-friendly destination. The refinery to the north is a practical landmark for navigation but also the source of documented pollution; the southern half of the beach is the cleaner option.
