CC's is a hollow beachbreak with quality peaks forming around the rivermouth, positioned on the Canterbury coast south of Kaikoura where the mountains meet the sea. The wave breaks close to shore, producing punchy, fast A-frame peaks over sand that reward surfers who can handle a steep takeoff and quick turns in a compressed zone. Mid to high tide on an incoming push is the target - lower water pushes the break too close to the beach and into shorebreak territory. The spot handles 1 to 1.8m of swell, with east being the optimal direction from a wider NE to SW window. Westerly winds are offshore. This is a reasonable option on the Canterbury east coast stretch between Kaikoura and Christchurch. The spot sits between the main Kaikoura area and the Pegasus Bay beaches, drawing fewer surfers than either hub. Rip currents are present, particularly near the rivermouth, and sharks are a known hazard in these waters. To the north, Oaro offers a similar setup in an even more remote mountain-backed setting. The close-to-shore break and consequent shorebreak intensity mean this is best suited to confident intermediates rather than beginners.
