A remote North Canterbury beachbreak that only switches on at high tide, producing short, mellow peaks over sand. The main draw sits offshore - Motunau Island harbours twin pointbreaks on its northeast and southwest flanks, delivering punchy, hollow waves over rock that require boat access via the river mouth at high tide. The beach itself suits improvers chasing uncrowded waves on east through south swells, while the island setups demand intermediate-to-advanced ability and commitment. Rocky patches lurk further out from the beach, and strong rips form regularly. Shark sightings are part of the equation on this stretch of coast. Crowds are virtually nonexistent - the combination of inconsistency, isolation and limited access keeps numbers down. When westerly winds blow, nearby Fields over the hill offers an alternative.
