Gore Bay.

Gore Bay sits outside the swell shadow that Banks Peninsula casts over Pegasus Bay, giving this 5km sand-bottom beachbreak an unusual ability to pick up energy from northeast through to south. Multiple shifting peaks break along the length of the beach, offering steep, hollow takeoffs that peel into workable walls over sand. The wave can produce vertical drops and barrel sections when conditions align, though flatter spots and well-covered faces dominate on smaller days. The Maori name for the area is Paua pirau, and the bay is flanked by the distinctive Cathedral Gully clay canyon to the north. Rip currents are the primary hazard and can be strong after heavy swells. Great white sharks frequent these waters. Summer weekends draw a crowd from Christchurch, but midweek and winter sessions are often empty. Nearby Port Robinson and the Hurunui River mouth offer alternatives when the banks are not cooperating.
