Kahutara.

Kahutara is a powerful right-hand point break that peels over a gravel and boulder reef at the mouth of the Kahutara River, a few kilometres south of Kaikoura. Often compared to its northern neighbour Mangamaunu, Kahutara hits harder and breaks less frequently, demanding patience and timing. The wave jacks up with a sucky, critical takeoff before running into a thick walling section that offers speed and occasional cover. On bigger swells the inside shorepound becomes intense and shallow - timing entries and exits matters. The bottom transitions from a rocky point at the south end through the stony rivermouth shore to sand and small stones further north. Southeast swells in the 3-to-12-foot range light it up, and a northwest wind holds the face clean. Lower tides produce the best shape, particularly on the outgoing push. Rip currents, submerged rocks, and the occasional shark presence are real considerations. The lineup draws a regular crowd when conditions align - respect the locals and know the etiquette. To the south, K Reef offers an alternative that favours easterly swells, and over twenty other quality setups line this stretch of coast within sight of State Highway One.
