Clarence River.

A river mouth right that breaks over a boulder bottom at the outflow of the Clarence River, north of Kaikoura. The wave dredges hard off the stones, producing hollow, fast barrels with critical takeoffs and bowly sections that wrap into the channel. Shifting sandbars occasionally throw up additional peaks along the shingle strand, but the primary right is the draw. Needs a solid E to S swell in the 0.9-2.4m range to switch on, with SE being the optimal angle. Best on lower tides during the outgoing push when the river current shapes the banks. Northwest winds hold the face clean. The setting is remote and rugged - access requires navigating forestry tracks off State Highway 1 or picking a path down the riverbed itself. Crowds are virtually nonexistent; the isolation, strong currents, resident seal colony, and shark presence keep numbers low. When it fires, this is one of the more intense waves on the Canterbury coastline - a genuinely hollow right in a region better known for reef setups.
