Lower dropping tides are the target, as they allow the wave to break further out before the shorebreak takes over. NE swell is optimal, with the wider NE to S window providing rideable surf across the stretch. SW winds are offshore and essential for clean conditions. Wave size ranges from 2 to 1.8m, and the spot suits beginners and intermediates looking for a session close to town. Rip currents are present, submerged boulders add consequence in the shallower sections, and sharks are a documented hazard - a shark attack occurred here in 2007, and the seal colony at Jimmy Armers is a known attractant. Most serious Kaikoura surfers head to Mangamaunu when conditions allow.
