Surf spot guide Β· Pegasus to Banks, New Zealand
Mellow sand-bottom beachbreak north of Mangamaunu producing short, fat A-frame peaks on NE to S swells.
High Waves
Large waves up to 2.3m expected at Blue Duck Stream. Peak conditions around 9:00 PM.
Exercise extreme caution when entering the water. Strong currents and large waves present. Warning valid until 9:00 PM.
Blue Duck Stream sits on the open coast just north of the renowned Mangamaunu point, where a stream deposit builds enough sand to sustain a shifting beachbreak. The peaks are short and lack real power - waves tend toward fat and sloppy even at size - but the sand bottom and forgiving shape make it a genuine beginner-friendly option along this stretch of the Kaikoura coast. It handles the full tide range, though high tide softens things further and low tide offers the most shape. Best on a clean SE swell with westerly winds holding the face up, it picks up anything from NE through to S but rarely delivers more than a fun, no-consequence session. Access is via Blue Duck Valley Road off State Highway 1, about 20 minutes north of Kaikoura - park and cross the railway tracks to reach the beach. The lineup is almost always empty, which is the main draw. Nearby Mangamaunu and Meatworks pull the experienced crew, leaving Blue Duck to those after an uncrowded, low-key wave. Sharks are present along this coastline.
Stream deposit holds sand enough for forgiving peaks, rarely crowded north of Mangamaunu.
