Meatworks serves up powerful A-frame peaks breaking over a boulder and sand bottom along the exposed coastline north of Kaikoura. The wave jacks quickly off the shallow reef, producing hollow, fast walls with barrel sections on the rights, which tend to favour southerly swells. Takeoffs are critical and often vertical, demanding committed entries. The spot sits roughly 15 kilometres north of Kaikoura township, accessed via a dirt road turnoff near Hapuku - look for parked cars clustered near the main peak. A trainline crossing marks the approach. Paddle-outs can be taxing on bigger days, with a prominent rock exposed at lower tides on the left side creating a noticeable rip. Rip currents run through the lineup and shark sightings, including great whites, have been reported in the area. Crowds are moderate - Meatworks draws a fraction of the numbers that neighbouring Mangamaunu attracts, but solid swells bring out the local crew. The atmosphere stays relaxed compared to the more high-profile breaks along this stretch of coast. Works best at low to mid tide on incoming swells from the SE through to S, with westerly winds holding the faces clean.
