Graveyards.

Graveyards is a right-hand point break over boulders located about a kilometre south of Mangamaunu on the Kaikoura coast, accessed via a gravel road that leads past the local cemetery - the feature that gives the spot its name. The wave opens with a fast, committed takeoff that promises more than it ultimately delivers: after the initial section, the wall backs off and fattens out, becoming more of a cruisey ride than a performance wave. Rides run 50 to 100 metres, shorter than the longer Mangamaunu sessions but still worthwhile when the main break is too crowded. The spot prefers SE to SW swell direction with westerly offshore winds, and works best at low to mid tide when the boulder bottom provides enough structure to shape the takeoff zone. Wave size ranges from 2 to 2.4m, with the quality rated excellent on its best days despite the tendency to fatten mid-ride. The spot serves as a natural overflow valve when Mangamaunu fills up, drawing intermediate surfers who prefer a less competitive lineup. Rip currents, sharks, and submerged boulders are the primary hazards - consistent with every spot along this stretch of coast.
