Pegasus Bay.

Pegasus Bay is a sweeping 50km stretch of sandy coast north of Christchurch, offering a diverse range of beachbreak options spread across multiple access points. The bay starts in the north at Fossils, a 4WD-access left point, and extends south through the beachbreaks at Amberley, Leithfield, Waikuku, and Pines before reaching the Waimakariri River mouth, where shifting sandbars produce low-tide lefts and rights alongside the whitebait fishermen. The wide swell window - NE through S with east being optimal - means the bay picks up a decent range of Canterbury swells. The beach works across all tidal stages, though the relationship between tide and swell size matters: smaller swells struggle to break at high tide, while bigger days become too heavy at low. Westerly winds are offshore, keeping conditions clean. The Waimakariri River brings cold, muddy water to the rivermouth peaks, which are best accessed from the north side at Kaiapoi. The sheer length of the bay spreads surfers thin and most Christchurch locals head to the closer city beaches. Rip currents are active throughout, particularly near the rivermouth, and sharks are present in Canterbury waters. Beginner-friendly on smaller days, with the multiple sections ensuring variety regardless of conditions.
