A series of shifting sand-bottom peaks breaking on both sides of the New Brighton Pier, the main surf hub on Christchurch's Pegasus Bay coastline. The pier structure shapes the sandbars, creating the best-defined banks on the south ramp side where lefts and rights peel with occasional barrel sections on steeper swells. Rides are short - typically under 50 metres - and the wave tends toward soft, crumbly walls with flat spots, though stronger NE swells steepen things up and produce punchy shorebreak sections. Sheltered from southerly groundswells by Banks Peninsula, so consistency relies on east to northeast energy wrapping into the bay. Westerly winds blow clean offshore. The oldest surf life-saving club in New Zealand, established in 1910, calls this beach home, and a Surfline webcam covers the lineup. Crowds are moderate - the pier car parks make access easy and the forgiving conditions attract beginners, but multiple peaks spread numbers across a long stretch of beach. Watch for fishing lines cast off the pier, and be mindful of swimmers near the surf club flags.
