Taylors Mistake.

Taylors Mistake is a beach break on the eastern fringes of Christchurch, tucked beneath headlands that provide natural wind shelter from the northwest. The spot is more exposed to E-NE swells than neighbouring beaches, which means it picks up size when others go flat - but that same exposure causes it to close out in smaller, weaker swells. When a solid NE to SE groundswell fills in and the swell height pushes into the 1.2-3m range, the break organises into chunky lefts and rights off the beach headlands, delivering fast, hollow sections with barrelling potential at the lower end of the tide. The sand bottom is shallow and steep, encouraging vertical takeoffs and quick, committed surfing. Low to mid incoming tide is the sweet spot: enough water to avoid the shallowest sections while the incoming push adds shape to the peaks. As the tide fills past mid, the wave loses definition and tends to back off. Rip currents run along the rocks and can be strong in bigger swells - experienced locals use them as a free paddle out rather than fighting the whitewater. Shark sightings have been recorded in the area, consistent with the broader Canterbury Bight coastline. The crowd is a persistent reality here: with a consistency rating that rewards patience, surfers tend to congregate whenever conditions align, and the lineup reflects it.
