Point Annihilation earns its name. This right-hand point break unloads over an uneven reef on the East Cape coast of New Zealand, delivering one of the region's most demanding and rewarding setups for experienced surfers. The wave breaks with a critical, often hollow takeoff that sets the tone for everything that follows - commit or pull back, there is no middle ground. Once through the initial section, the wall links into dynamic, fast-running lines that stretch between 100 and 200 metres depending on conditions and swell angle. The wave responds best to south swell, with a workable window from southeast through southwest, and handles size well - anywhere between four and twelve feet the break performs. Lower tides and falling water sharpen the shape and push the wave into its best form, though it is rideable across the tidal range. A northerly wind is ideal, keeping faces clean. Getting out requires a long paddle from the ruins of the Wiakokopu wharf, which serves as the primary access reference. The lineup draws a committed crew of local rippers who know this break intimately, and the localism is real. Good swells require patience, but when it fires the quality is undeniable. Rips, shallow sections, boils, and submerged reef demand full situational awareness on every wave.
