Surf spot guide Β· East Cape, New Zealand
Slopey lefts on S swells around the Mokotahi cliffs β good for improvers and longboarders. Shoulders predictably.
Mahia Reef sits around the front of the Mokotahi cliffs, producing slopey lefts that shoulder predictably on major S swells with pushing tides. The wave is well-suited to improvers and longboarders who want a defined, manageable left without the intensity of the more famous Mahia breaks. NE winds hold the face clean, and mid to high tide on an incoming push covers the uneven reef for the best shape. Size ranges from 3 to 2.4m with rides of 50 to 100 metres. The spot is rarely crowded, primarily because the same S swells that activate this reef also fire the more exciting points and reefs elsewhere on the peninsula, drawing surfers away. Submerged reef is the only flagged hazard. Quality is rated good on its best days. A useful fallback for intermediate surfers when the primary Mahia spots are too crowded or too heavy.
