Mahunga Beach.

Mahunga Beach is a 6km arc of sand on the northern side of the Mahia Peninsula, producing fun, longboard-friendly peaks across its full length on any E swell. The wave prefers more tide and E in the swell to liven up the standard beachbreak shape - without that angle the peaks tend to be soft and lacking punch. All tides work with incoming tending to produce the best shape. Westerly winds are offshore. Size ranges from 2 to 1.8m with short rides under 50 metres. Facilities are at the north end where a small crowd gathers; walking or driving south opens up increasingly empty peaks. At the southern extent, a rivermouth shapes the waves on Oraka Beach, adding a more structured option to the standard beachbreak. No significant hazards are flagged - this is one of the safest and most accessible stretches of surf on the Mahia Peninsula, ideal for beginners and longboarders.
