Mahunga Beach is a 6km arc of sand on the northern side of the Mahia Peninsula, producing fun, longboard-friendly peaks across its full length on any E swell. It needs extra tide and some east in the swell to add life to the usual beachbreak peaks; without that angle they tend to be soft and weak. All tides work with incoming tending to produce the best shape. Westerly winds are offshore. Size ranges from 2 to 1.8m with short rides under 50 metres. Facilities are at the north end where a small crowd gathers; walking or driving south opens up increasingly empty peaks. Down at the south end, a rivermouth sculpts the banks on Oraka Beach, giving more defined waves than the usual beachbreak. No significant hazards are flagged - this is one of the safest and most accessible stretches of surf on the Mahia Peninsula, ideal for beginners and longboarders.
