Opoutama is a long, beautiful stretch of beach on the Mahia Peninsula, producing mellow, easy-rolling waves that suit beginners and longboarders looking for a relaxed session. The wave breaks over sand and handles 1 to 1.5m of S swell - anything bigger and the beach tends to close out. All tides work with incoming tending to produce the best shape. NE winds are offshore. No significant hazards are flagged - no rips, localism, sharks, or submerged rocks - making it one of the safest accessible surf spots on the Mahia Peninsula. A campground and facilities at the northern end provide a convenient base. The setting is characteristically beautiful Mahia coast with clear water and a long arc of sand backed by farmland. A genuine learner-friendly option that doesn't compromise on scenery.
