Surf spot guide Β· East Cape, New Zealand
Super consistent reef peak with barrel sections β rights are hollower and longer. Sheltered from wind. Crowded.
Blacks Reef is the most consistent and accessible quality break on the Mahia Peninsula, a reef peak that produces both lefts and rights with a nice barrel section on the better days. The rights are hollower and longer, but lefts appear in more SE-E swells, giving the spot genuine versatility. The wider stretch includes adjacent powerful beachbreaks and cliff-backed peaks that add variety. Sheltered from the prevailing winds, the spot is well protected compared to the more exposed breaks elsewhere on the peninsula, which is precisely why it draws the heaviest crowd on the coast. The spot works on virtually any swell from E through SW. Northerly winds are offshore, and mid to high tide on an incoming push produces the cleanest shape. Size ranges from 3 to 3.7m with rides of 100 to 200 metres. Localism is flagged - the spot is the closest option from the north and west approaches, meaning it's the first spot everyone checks. Submerged reef is the primary physical hazard.
