Surf spot guide Β· East Cape, New Zealand
Square, super-shallow reef barrels on a rocky spit β one of the region's most powerful and hollow waves.
Mahia Spit is a long, skinny finger of rock that juts into the Pacific, drawing NE swells down its eastern flank with a force and hollowness unmatched in the East Cape region. The outside Spit is the main event: square, super-shallow, and brutally fast, it produces heavy barrel sections that demand experienced riders comfortable with critical takeoffs over uneven reef. Swell wraps around the tip of the spit, producing an a-frame peak - the primary left unloads down the eastern side with serious consequence, while a right peels off the tip with slightly more room to manoeuvre. Both require respect. Waves run 100-200m when conditions align, with size ranging 0.9-3.7m on a good NE-S swell, though consistency sits around 50%. The inside section is notably more forgiving and accessible to intermediate surfers, offering gentler walls without the reef exposure of the outside peak. Weekends attract a local crew who know exactly what they have, and localism is real - read the lineup before paddling out. Mid to high tide on an incoming push is the sweet spot; too low and the reef becomes genuinely dangerous. Just north of Mahia township, Old Mans offers a series of scattered cliff-backed sand and reef peaks for those seeking a mellower alternative on the same stretch of coast.
Square, super-shallow barrels down Mahia Spit's eastern flank demand experience over uneven reef.
