Surf spot guide Β· Simeulue, Indonesia
Swell-magnet A-frame reef over dead coral that dishes out fun barrels on small days and morphs into a heavy slab at size.
Monkey Trees is an A-frame reefbreak over dead coral in front of Batu Rundung surf resort on Simeulue's Naibos coast. The peak favours lefts, producing hollow, fast barrel sections in the 0.9-1.5m range. It acts as a reliable swell magnet, picking up S to W energy that misses neighbouring breaks. When swell pushes overhead, the left transforms into a thick slab with vertical takeoffs while the right shoulder stays more forgiving. Bigger sets tend to close out before the paddle-out channel, limiting ride length. A long jetty extending from the resort serves as the main landmark. Resort guides run boats to additional unnamed setups along 50km of surrounding coastline. Crowds fluctuate with resort occupancy rather than seasonal patterns, ranging from empty peaks to a handful of guests on the same takeoff. The right-hander Cocaine sits across the bay and handles bigger swells more cleanly, offering a natural alternative when Monkey Trees maxes out.

Crowds depend on Batu Rundung resort occupancy. Outside of peak charter season, expect only a few surfers in the water. When the resort is full, the small takeoff zone can feel congested.

+9 MORE βWorks best as a small-wave option when other Naibos spots are flat or too small
Incoming tide cleans up the shape and reduces backwash off the dead coral shelf
The left barrels are the main draw but the right shoulder gives a mellower option on the same takeoff
When it gets overhead, consider paddling across to Cocaine which handles size better
