Surf spot guide · Mentawai, Indonesia
Macaronis is a world-famous, highly consistent left-hand reef break located in the southern Mentawai Islands.
Macaronis, located on Pulau Pagai Utara in the southern Mentawai Islands, is renowned for its machine-like, high-performance lefts breaking over a shallow reef. The wave offers flawless, rippable walls, barrels, and playful sections ideal for advanced maneuvers, while smaller conditions make it accessible to intermediate surfers. Swell consistency is excellent year-round, especially during the dry season, attracting surfers from all over the globe. Access is only by boat, followed by a short paddle out, and the spot can get crowded since the 40-surfer daily cap that limited the lineup was withdrawn in February 2026. Sharp coral reef and powerful waves pose hazards, particularly at lower tides or on bigger days, making it unsuitable for beginners. The stunning tropical scenery and nearby surf resorts enhance the overall experience, solidifying Macaronis as a must-surf destination in the Mentawai Islands.

World-class but crowded
When Macaronis is too big or too crowded, Mini Macas breaks inside the main peak and Silabu Left is a mellower reef a short boat ride through the mangroves.
Macaronis still breaks well with a light onshore southwest breeze on it, so an onshore forecast is not a reason to skip a session.
Beginners belong at Fish Fingers, the sand-bottom peak across the channel from Macaronis Resort, not on the main reef.
Macaronis Right, on the far side of Pasangan Bay, is the quiet alternative on a thick south swell with a northerly wind and a medium to high tide.
