Thunders Surf Spot Guide — Mentawai, Indonesia

Thunders is a renowned reef break located off the southern coast of Pagai Selatan in the Mentawai Islands, Indonesia, famous for its heavy, bowly left-hand waves that offer machine-like consistency and long, peeling rides. The spot can handle large swells and often delivers quality surf even when other breaks are flat, making it highly reliable. It works best from April to October on solid south to southwest swells combined with easterly to southeasterly winds. The wave breaks over a sharp coral reef with strong currents and a shifting lineup, requiring caution and making it suitable only for experienced surfers. Access is only by surf charter boat from Padang, and while the lineup can get busy during peak season, the vibe remains friendly and energetic despite the crowds.
