Surf spot guide · Mentawai, Indonesia
Greenbush is a world-class, heavy left-hand reef break in the southern Mentawai Islands known for its powerful, hollow barrels and extreme challenge.
Greenbush, located on Pulau Pagai Utara in the southern Mentawai Islands, is renowned for its massive, round barrels and fast, technical lefts breaking over a sharp, shallow reef. This powerful and unforgiving wave demands high skill levels, offering thick tubes and challenging sections that are suitable only for highly experienced surfers seeking intense, adrenaline-filled rides. The break is tide-sensitive and surfable exclusively at high tide, ideally on a rising push, when the reef is less dangerously shallow. Optimal conditions require a solid south to southwest swell with real period behind it, combined with northeast to east winds. Access is by boat due to the spot's remote location, and careful timing with the tide is essential to navigate the hazardous reef safely. Crowds tend to be moderate, as the wave's intensity deters less skilled surfers.
