Surf spot guide · Mentawai, Indonesia
Lance’s Right is a world-class, fast, and long barreling right-hand reef break in the Mentawai Islands known for its sharp reef.
Lance’s Right, also known as Hollow Trees or HT’s, is one of the most renowned right-handers in Indonesia, located near Katiet village in the Mentawai Islands. The wave offers perfect, long, and hollow right-hand barrels, especially at the main section called 'The Office.' It delivers powerful, mechanical waves from swells typically coming from the southwest between April and October. A notorious end section known as 'The Surgeon’s Table' exposes a sharp, shallow reef at lower tides, adding to the hazards alongside strong currents and sea urchins. Access is exclusively by boat, either via charter or by paddling out from local accommodations. Due to its intensity and technical nature, this spot is favored by advanced and expert surfers and is not suitable for beginners. The global reputation of Lance’s Right means it can become crowded, particularly with visiting surf charters.

The most common mistake is paddling straight over the Surgeon's Table on the way back out. Take your time and go around it via the channel.
At lower tides straighten out into the lagoon and paddle around rather than risk the end section.
Take the high line and surf the top third of the wave to hold speed through the difficult sections.
You need a decent sized swell, roughly six to eight feet, for the sections to connect. Below that each one breaks separately with a small channel between them.
If you are staying in the accommodation at Katiet it is an easy paddle out through the deep channel.
