Surf spot guide · Mentawai, Indonesia
Hideaways is a powerful left-hand reef break on Pulau Siaim in northern Mentawai, renowned for its hollow barrels and consistent swells.
Hideaways offers a world-class, barreling left over sharp reef, attracting experienced surfers seeking heavy, hollow waves. Located on the northeastern tip of Pulau Siaim in the Mentawai Islands, the wave features a critical, hollow takeoff followed by a longer, rippable section that holds its shape even in smaller swells and gains power with larger swells. The spot works best with a solid south to southwest swell and light northeast winds, and is best surfed at high tide to avoid the shallow, sharp reef that increases injury risk at low tide. Access is only by boat, as it sits off the island of Pulau Nyang Nyang, and strong currents can be present on bigger days. Popular among intermediate and advanced surfers seeking thrilling rides and shelter from southerly winds, crowds vary but can get busy during peak swell season.
