Surf spot guide · Mentawai, Indonesia
A playful and mellow left-hand reef break in the Mentawai Islands' Playgrounds region, popular with beginners and intermediates and surrounded by scenic tropical scenery.
Bengs Bengs is a consistent left-hand reef break located in the northern Mentawai Islands, Indonesia, known as a swell magnet in the Playgrounds area. It offers long, smooth, and playful waves that break over a relatively forgiving coral reef, making it ideal for beginners and intermediates, while advanced surfers can find occasional barrels on bigger swells. The spot works best with a southwest swell and light northeast winds, and is most reliable during the dry season. Although generally mellow, the reef can become shallow at low tide, so caution is advised. Access is straightforward, typically via a short boat ride from nearby surf resorts or charter boats. Hazards are minimal, but occasional crowds can be expected during peak season.

Relaxed and playful atmosphere
Beng Bengs is the one wave in the Playgrounds that gets better as the tide drops, so go when everything else is going fat.
It is at its best on a small swell day, when it is the most mechanical and rippable wave on this stretch.
The reef underneath is deep and forgiving by Mentawai standards, which is why it carries beginners as well as intermediates.
Watch the end of the wave: the reef dries there, and that is where the ride should finish.
