Bank Vaults offers one of the heaviest and most consistent right-hand waves in the Mentawais, breaking over a sharp coral reef in the Playgrounds area. The spot is renowned for its long, fast, and hollow barrels with thick walls, featuring a notorious end section that often shuts down abruptly. It can handle large S to SW swells and performs best during mid to high tides, making it a favorite among advanced surfers. Access is only by boat, typically from nearby surf camps, and the wave breaks far from shore with deep water takeoffs. The reef is shallow and exposed at low tide, requiring precise positioning and confidence. Due to its intense power, heavy waves, and challenging takeoffs, Bank Vaults is not suitable for beginners and carries significant hazards. Crowds can be an issue during peak season, especially when conditions are ideal.

Most Playgrounds camps and charter boats are a 10 to 15 minute speedboat ride away, so agree a pickup position with the skipper before you paddle out.

Respect locals
Incoming through mid tide is the pick for barrels, and very high water fattens it off.

Hire local boat
Bring a bigger board when it is solid, because it holds up to triple overhead.

Many surfers sit wide rather than deep, so the best waves go to whoever will take off under the lip.

May to September is the most consistent stretch of the April to October season.

HAZARDS · KNOW BEFORE YOU PADDLE

Shallow sharp coral sits under the take-off zone and is least forgiving as the tide drains toward low.
The peak shifts and wide sets arrive without warning, so a late decision leaves you in the impact zone.
The end section shuts down abruptly rather than tapering off.
Hold-downs are long once it is over head high, and the wave breaks far from shore with no walk-in exit.
Rips and undertow run along the reef.
A good swell draws charter boats and the lineup fills quickly.
